Celebration of African World Heritage Day

On African World Heritage Day (May 5), Professor El-Enany, African Union endorsed candidate for the position of UNESCO Director-General, delivered a speech in Maputo, underscoring the importance of preserving Africa’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

In his remarks, he highlighted the challenges facing African heritage, including underrepresentation on the UNESCO World Heritage List, illegal trafficking of artifacts, and the impacts of climate change. He called for greater international support to protect African heritage, including increased resources, capacity-building programs, and initiatives to promote heritage tourism.

Professor El-Enany also emphasized that the responsibility for safeguarding Africa’s heritage lies with the people of Africa, while acknowledging the crucial role of international cooperation. He commended the African World Heritage Fund for its efforts and reiterated his commitment to supporting African heritage through UNESCO.
