On July 15, 2025, on the sidelines of the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, Professor Khaled El-Enany participated in the side event “World Heritage Capacity Building in Africa,” co-hosted by the Permanent Delegation of Egypt to UNESCO and the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF)—of which he has been appointed patron.
The event underscored the importance of strengthening long-term heritage capacities across the continent. In his remarks, Professor El-Enany emphasized the need for tailored training programs, sustainable funding mechanisms, and long-term mentorship to empower a new generation of African professionals dedicated to safeguarding their cultural and natural heritage.
He stressed the urgency of investing in African people themselves: local experts, young professionals, and communities who are on the front lines of preservation. He also called for stronger partnerships to amplify African voices, integrate heritage education into school curricula, and promote the use of innovative tools—such as digital technologies and artificial intelligence—in heritage work.
This powerful exchange reflected a shared conviction: the future of our World Heritage depends on Africans.
In doing so, Professor El-Enany reaffirmed his vision of a more inclusive and forward-looking UNESCO—one that truly serves its communities, consistent with his campaign: UNESCO for the People.
