Speech at the UN Global Compact Annual Forum

In May 2024, Professor Khaled El-Enany delivered a keynote speech in the roundtable discussion at the United Nations Global Compact’s annual forum, centered on the theme “Sustainable Cities in Africa: Leading the Way to a Green Future.” In his speech, he addressed the challenges faced by African cities in building sustainable communities. He discussed the urgent need for efficient resource management, equitable access to basic services, and the importance of fostering inclusive economic growth and social cohesion.

Professor El-Enany also emphasized the pivotal role of culture in the sustainability of urban environments. He highlighted how cultural heritage can drive innovation and economic resilience, urging policymakers to integrate cultural preservation into urban planning. He also underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between governments, the private sector, and international organizations to achieve the sustainable development goals. His speech called for the promotion of culture as a key pillar in creating resilient and thriving communities, particularly in Africa, where cultural heritage is increasingly under threat from urbanization and climate change.
